HOLLY

Holly hadn’t planned on driving across town. She hadn’t planned on standing in front of her cousin Clara’s apartment ringing the buzzer.

But here she was, tapping her foot on the carpeted floor, becoming increasingly more impatient that her cousin was taking her time to open the door.

Holly had left work with a migraine—something she’d never experienced before—but there was no other way to describe the relentless pounding in her skull. The logical thing would have been to go home and lie in a dark room with a cold compress pressed to her forehead, pretending the assault on her brain wasn’t caused by Gianna, but there was nothing logical about the way Holly was feeling.

She pressed the buzzer again.

Still no answer. Nothing except for the faint sound of a baby babbling coming from the other door, which meant her patience was thinning out like the hairline of a middle-aged man.

She was just about to start aggressively jabbing the buzzer the same way an ER doctor tried to revive a flatlining patient when the door finally swung open.

Clara stood there, barefoot, wearing a Guns & Roses sweatshirt that had seen better days, her dark hair thrown up in a messy bun. On her hip was her ten-month-old daughter—and Holly’s goddaughter—Josie, who was chewing intently on what appeared to be a remote control.

“Holly?” Clara blinked, then frowned as she adjusted the baby on her hip. “What are you doing here? Aren’t you supposed to be in surgery or something?”

Her cousin from her mother’s side who was born exactly one month apart—the girls had spent most of their childhood telling other people that they were in fact twins—looked at her as if she was a ghost. And honestly, Holly couldn’t blame her. Clara knew her well enough to know that Holly didn’t just drop by unannounced, especially not in the middle of a work day.

“I was just in the area,” Holly lied. For some reason she couldn’t understand, she just couldn’t tell her the truth because honestly, Holly didn’t know the truth. She had no idea why she’d even showed up there. Did she want Clara’s advice? Did she want her cousin to tell her that she was being stupid?

Clara’s eyebrows lifted. “You were in the area?”

“Yep.”

“Just driving around downtown two hours from where you live for fun?”

“Correct,” Holly replied, shifting her weight from one foot to the other and resisting the urge to stomp past her cousin to the fridge where an opened bottle of wine was probably sitting in the door.

Clara sighed, stepping back to let her in. “Whatever crisis you’re having, just know that I haven’t showered in two days, I’m running on approximately twenty minutes of sleep, and Josie may or may not have figured out how to throw her sippy cup across the room.”

“Good to know,” Holly muttered, stepping inside.

The apartment, which before Josie’s birth had always gleamed immaculately with bright, shiny herringbone floors, white finishes, and meticulously arranged decor, was now in a constant state of chaos. A
